Zambia in hot water for fan behaviour in Uyo

Zambia could be in hot water after FIFA and CAF have launched a probe following their fans behaviour against Nigeria on Saturday.

The Chipolopolo fans displayed a banner in support of current president Edgar Lungu during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.

Coach Wedson Nyirenda’s men lost 1-0 allowing the Super Eagles to book a spot at the global football tournament in Russia.

Media reports in Nigeria indicate that FIFA does not allow political messages during games.

This means Zambia could be fined by football’s governing body as a result at the end of the inquiry.

“However, keeping in mind that the rules need to be applied in a neutral and fair manner across FIFA’s 211 member associations, the display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited,” said chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Claudio Sulser to the Zambian Observer.

”In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else.”

Meanwhile, it is reported that the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) were not aware of the behavior of the Zambian fans in Nigeria.
