When considering how the number of maternal deaths has increased over the last 30 years, a new study has named the United States as the “most dangerous place in the developed world to give birth.”
A recent USA Today investigation deemed the U.S. as the “most dangerous place in the developed world to give birth” due to the high rates of death caused by hospital negligence. Doctors and nurses failure to perform basic safety checks, like checking blood loss after delivery and monitoring high blood pressure were also a key factor in the study, People reports.
The long-term study was led by Alison Young and followed similar research conducted by ProPublica and the New York Times. Young’s new study found that more than 50,000 women are severely injured during childbirth each year in the U.S., with an additional 700 women dying. And despite medical advances, the rate of women dying before, during or after childbirth has more than doubled since the 1990s, USA Today reports.
