Two people have been killed, including the gunman, after a man opened fire at a hospital in Chicago.

One police officer was also shot at Mercy Hospital and is fighting for his life.

The officer was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in extremely critical condition, police said.

The Chicago Police Department added shots were fired both inside and outside the hospital between 3pm and 3.30pm (local time).

An employee of the hospital’s family clinic said she heard eight or nine shots. The clinic’s employees and patients locked the doors and hid in the back of the clinic.

The gunman is reported to have been shot and killed.

ABC7 Chicago report that a source has told them the first victim was an ER doctor who was reporting to her afternoon shift at the hospital.

An employee of the hospital’s family clinic said: “I am scared as hell. I have never been so scared, I hear of shootings going on every day at people’s workplaces, but not where I work at.

“This was very too close to me. That could have been us back there and if any bullets had pierced the wall we all would have been hurt.”

Witness James Gray said: “It was chaos, mass chaos.”

He told ABC7 Chicago he saw a man and a woman who looked like they were walking towards the parking lot.

“The gentleman turned around and shot three times in the chest,” Gray said. “Once she fell to the ground, he turned around and shot her three more times.”

Gray described the shooting as surreal, “like a movie scene.”

A witness told reporters that he saw at least one one woman shot near the hospital.

hospital employee said a notice came over Mercy’s public address system telling everyone in the hospital to lock their doors, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Chicago Sun-Times report a man who was inside the hospital visiting his wife in the hospital “heard 5 shots rapid fire, possibly from a large caliber weapon”.

Witnesses who spoke to ABC7 Chicago outside the hospital said they heard a flurry of gunshots, as many as 10 to 20, causing them to duck beneath cars and hide.
